Anhydrous barium chloride comes on the market as a white, crystalline powder. It tastes bitter and is toxic if eaten or inhaled. When crystallizing from an aqueous solution, the dihydrate is obtained in colorless, flat plates. When heated above 120 ° C, the dihydrate gives off its water of crystallization.



With sulphates, barium chloride forms a whitish barium sulphate precipitate. Like all other barium salts, barium chloride produces green flame colors in the flame test. With sulfuric acid, the pigment barite white, which consists of barium sulfate, is obtained:

BaCl2 + H2SO4  BaSO4 + 2 HCl
Manufacturing
The technical production takes place from hydrochloric acid and barium carbonate or barium sulfide:

BaS + 2 HCl BaCl2 + H2S.
use
In the laboratory, barium chloride is used to detect sulfates. The white pigment barium sulfate can be produced from barium chloride. In fireworks, it creates green colors as an admixture. When hardening steel, the steel workpieces to be hardened are heated in a barium chloride melt heated to red heat. Barium chloride can also be used to impregnate wood and as a stain for dyeing with dyes.



Barium salts cause the green color in fireworks.

A substance to be examined (or a solution) is acidified with dilute hydrochloric acid and a barium chloride solution is added. If a white precipitate forms, sulphates are present. White, insoluble barium sulfate BaSO falls from the solution4out:

BaCl2 + CaSO4  BaSO4 ↓ + CaCl2

To prepare a barium chloride solution with an approximate concentration of 0.1 mol / l, dissolve 2.44 g of barium chloride dihydrate in 50 ml of distilled water and make up to 100 ml with water.



A white precipitate is formed when sulfate is detected.
