We live in an indecent time

Economic policy: Aiwanger defends quick mask purchase in March 2020

Munich (dpa) - The Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs Hubert Aiwanger defended the quick purchase of masks from March 2020 and protested against being moved near unclean Amigo shops. At the time, the ministry had ordered one million breathing masks at a net price of five million euros from the Lower Bavarian company Zettl, shortly after the catastrophe was declared in Bavaria due to the corona pandemic.

"We have successfully campaigned for the life and health of the citizens of our country and do not let this work be ruined by false reporting," said Aiwanger on Wednesday. "It is indecent and damaging the reputation of the Zettl company and my person to twist the facts here now and to want to get close to dubious deals."

Respiratory protection masks were missing all over the world at that time, emphasized the ministry in Munich and quoted the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices: "The supply of medical staff in Germany cannot currently be ensured with CE-marked respiratory protection masks." The federal institute then certified the Zettl masks. Because of the urgent need, they were "made by hand on the sewing machine" and distributed to clinics, medical practices and care facilities between March and June 2020. In May 2020 the companies Sandler, PIA and Zettl founded the "Bavarian Mask Association".

"We have proven that Bavarian production of high-quality masks is more reliable and efficient than buying cheap Asian goods," said Aiwanger (Free Voters). The TÜV found defects in FFP-2 masks for EUR 4.50 net, 30,000 protective masks of the Bavarian riot police had been recalled because of possible defects.
