What is Charles Bukowski's Bluebird about

charles bukowski, or what?

  • i also like faktotum, there is a film about it with matt dillon. in my opinion there are better books with short stories by him than kaputt in hollywood, e.g. everyone pays extra or hot water music. as a novel i recommend hollywood and if you like poetry western avenue or anywhere in texas

    Thanks for the recommendations!

  • What is to be made of the so-called audio book that Götz George speaks?
    I don't know it and before I get it;
Maybe one of you can say something (write)

sorry, but i can't tell you anything about that because i have lived in rio since the mid-nineties. boys and girls who live in germany have to take care of that.

  • today i read something in the brazilian daily newspaper. ute lemper will set poems by bukowski to music. she is already composing and the cd should be out in the middle of next year.
quote ute: what attracts me to bukowski's poetry is that it was not fake, it really comes across what cannot be said of other poets of the beatnik generation ....... i am so fascinated by his poems that i can't stop to compose pieces to set his poems to music. it will be a very difficult decision for me what goes on the cd and what not. quote end.
then I'm curious. I am not at all ute lemper, but I have to treat myself to this cd.

  • I didn't expect Lemper, but that could be very interesting. I don't even know how she wants to approach this musically (voc. + Piano?).
The way she describes B, I also perceive him, even though I have only read poems so far.

she composes on the piano and takes over the vocals. whether other instruments will be added? nothing known.

So, Ute has now done her thing and it's called "The Bukowski Project". On several evenings she performed the poems she had set to music (plus singing) by Bukowski in Manhattan in Joe's Pub with her band in mid-August this year.
I couldn't find out which poems they were until now. The poems set to music were from the American volumes:

1). The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992)
2.) You Get so Alone at Times that it just makes Sense (1986)
3.) What matters most is how well you walk through the Fire (????)

    German editions?

1.) On the bike into nirvana, but out of stock.
2.) Only in excerpts in the collection of poems Red Mercedes, but out of print
3.) Never appeared in a German edition

Maybe I'll get something out of the setlist.

  • With the help of the German Bukowski Society, I was able to find out the set list of the poems by Charles, which Ute set to music:
    1 The crunch
    2 This moment
3 The meaning of it all
    4 beast
    5 Dinosauria, we
6 She comes from somewhere / you do it while you're killing flies
    7 Let me tell you
8 They don't eat like us
    9 memory
    10 Pulled down shade
11 On the sidewalk and in the sun
    12 Life Dance
    13 The Bluebird
    13 No help for that
    14 The Man
    15 warm light
    16 Wind the clock
    17 Darkness
    18 Time
    19 How is your heart
20 Full moon / my garden
21 Well, that's just the way it is
    22 My uncle Jack
    23 The last shot

Unfortunately Ute said that she cannot release a CD or DVD at the moment because of the rights. Well, she can talk to Linda Lee Bukowski.

So if you have the American editions, see previous post, you can read it up

  • Anyone who is a Bukowski fan, or at least knows something of him, should buy the best and most complete biography about him. It was written after his death. In the book you can also find the complete list of his books, CDs, DVDs, films and books about him.
I have the Portuguese edition, so it should also be available in German, but I don't know the title. The original is called:

Howard Sounes: Charles Bukowski: Locked in the Arms of a Crazy Life

The book reads very well. Even those who don't know Bukowski will have fun reading and then maybe buy a book or two afterwards. With the book I feel like I did with Chapter & Verse: After reading it, I wistfully asked myself: What, over there? I would have liked to read more.

  • Quote from Mr. Plod:
I owe you an answer in the reading thread for my CB reading. It will follow shortly
So, Mr. Plod, what did you read from Bukowski and how did you like it? Do you prefer his novels, short stories or poems? Have you seen "Barfly"? Screenplay Charles Bukowski, actors Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunnaway.

  • Hello Charles Bukowski,
I came to Genesis through my very good buddy :)
and I don't even know, like Peter, I think Philphase is good too

Very well, then your buddy did you a big favor. :) Have you read anything from Charles Bukowski? Can recommend a lot.
