What does the term chick flick mean

Chick lit

As Chick lit, in which lit the short form of literature(~ Literature) is called fiction, i.e. entertainment literature that is primarily aimed at young women. Literally the designation could be with Chick literature translate. Basically, this means that Chick lit about undemanding, but humorous and shallow novels whose target group is women. This name, which appeared for the first time in the 90s, is to be understood positively.

The English Chick means in German chick or young bird. Colloquially, however, the term is also called Chick or girl used and can therefore be used as a swear word for women or at least as a designation of a superficial, vain stupid as well as a young woman.

The term does not refer to the readership, but rather to the protagonists of the work, i.e. the characters that appear in it. Chick lit is thus about young women and their circle of friends who lead a life in the upper or middle class and go through the ups and downs of everyday life.

Note: So primarily this is not about sophisticated literature, but rather very shallow entertainment. Well-known representatives of the genre are, for example, the book "Sex and the City", which is based on the column of the same name by Candace Bushnell, or the novel "Chocolate for Breakfast" by Helen Fielding. The genre includes dramas, comedies, vampire novels, and mysteries.

Features of chick lit

Since the genre is quite new and only since chocolate for breakfast or Sex and the City became very popular, there are no clear characteristics. However, there are some characteristics that apply to most works of the young genre.

  • The focus of the novel is principally on young women who have to assert themselves in their job and mostly in the middle or upper class of society. Often the protagonist is a woman who has both feet on the ground, but is always looking for love.
  • The determining motive of the genre is therefore love and the search for the right partner. The main character's circle of friends is often turbulent, with rumors, gossip, gossip and affairs, as well as the pursuit of happiness in love, representing the greatest conflicts.
  • As a result, everyday situations primarily determine the plot of the novel and usually culminate in comical or ironic moments or an exchange of blows among friends.
  • In contrast to the Bildungsroman, the heroine is already in the middle of life at the beginning and only has to assert herself in it. So it's less about developing the protagonist or mastering a big task. Primarily are individual (strange) Episodes or self-discovery in the absolute foreground of the story.
  • Thus, the world of the characters is basically intact, is therefore only tarnished by smaller, rather comical, conflicts and largely corresponds to the expectations of the reader. This is due to the fact that there is usually a clear distinction between good and bad or right and wrong, whereby the work usually ends happily, i.e. a happy end Has.
  • The latter feature of the Chick lit it is also why the genre can be understood as trivial literature. It has to put up with this designation, as it is usually affirmative is. Affirmation means that the existing image of society is not broken or questioned. In contrast, high literature seeks to grapple with this image.
  • Another characteristic of the trivial nature of the Chick lit is due to the fact that - especially due to the success of the above examples - Books of the genre are written for a mass audience and are often produced in band work, presenting a beautiful world that allows a clear distinction between good and bad.

Chick flick and Chick lit

In the field of film there is a linguistic equivalent: the so-called Chick flick. This term is used to describe films that tell of love or focus on emotions. These should also be aimed primarily at a female audience.

Flick is the slang term for film in English. The characteristics of the film genre do not differ from the literary one. In the film, too, young, self-confident women are the focus of the story and move in an ideal world that is basically divided into good and bad.

Such films traditionally come to the cinema around Valentine's Day, but of course there are exceptions. One example is the classic Dirty Dancing. But even recently we have found what the film adaptation of Sex and the City, but of course also those Twilight series fabulously illustrated.
