Help with attention deficit disorders: mindfulness exercises

ADHD guide | The information portal for adults with ADHD

If thoughts keep wandering and concentrated work is not possible, mindfulness exercises can help.

Objective:

  • With mindfulness exercises you train the ability to stay focused on one thing.

Principle:

  • In a mindfulness exercise, what is happening at this moment is very consciously perceived.
  • The focus is directed to just one activity or one thought - everything else is left out.

Mindfulness Exercises for More Attention: Tips

  • Start with short, very simple exercises. For example, initially focus solely on your breath for just 1 minute.
  • Mindfulness has to be practiced - at the beginning you will surely wander again and again in your thoughts. That's not bad.
  • If you notice them wander, take a quick breath. Then go back to the activity or thought you want to focus on.
  • The more often you direct your attention back during the exercises, the more likely you will be able to do this in everyday situations (e.g. at work).
  • Practice regularly - preferably once or twice a day.
  • Important: Be patient with yourself!
