Going Vegan: How Can You Benefit From Veganism As A Trader?

What is veganism?

"Veganism is a way of life that seeks - as much as possible and practicable - to avoid all forms of exploitation and cruelty to animals for food, clothing or other purposes." - The Vegan Society.

The vegan diet and lifestyle consists of consuming products that do not contain any ingredients of animal origin, including animal products such as eggs, honey and milk. Vegans also forego products such as cosmetics if they have been tested on animals, or clothing if they are made from animal materials such as leather or fur.

Vegan products vs. herbal products

Those who make vegan foods primarily focus on one nutrient: protein. While the human diet traditionally sources protein from meat, there are more and more products made with protein from plants such as lentils and chickpeas.

Vegan products should not be confused with plant-based products, especially when it comes to food. All vegan foods are plant-based, but not all plant-based foods are vegan. Although some foods contain protein from plants, they can still contain or be made from secondary ingredients derived from animals. For example, Guinness is not made from products of animal origin, but until recently fish swim bladders were used to clarify beer, making it unsuitable for vegans. Beverage maker Diageo has stopped using swim bladders to make Guinness vegan-friendly and is currently offering vegan alternatives to other beverages in its portfolio, such as Baileys.

Also worth mentioning is the so-called cultivated meat, also known as laboratory meat. In this case, protein is grown in a bioreactor using ingredients such as sugar, creating "meat" without raising animals.

Vegan Diet: Is It About Anything More Than Protecting Animals?

Animal welfare is the main aspect of veganism. The purchasing behavior of vegans is also shaped by other beliefs. Many vegans only want to buy products with a low carbon footprint to help fight climate change, while others also consider how much water was used to make a product. Some argue that veganism is not just about protecting animals and not eating meat, it is about far-reaching principles aimed at protecting the environment. Global meat and milk production must be reduced by 50% by 2050 if the world is to comply with the Paris Agreement climate plans, Greenpeace said.

How much is the vegan market worth?

Many foods, such as vegetables, are inherently vegan-friendly, which means that the vegan market is already big. The global vegan and vegetarian market is worth over $ 50 billion, according to Euromonitor. Revenue in the vegan meat alternatives segment was $ 19.5 billion in 2019.

Separate figures from the US management consultancy AT Kearney predict that sales in the field of plant-based meat alternatives will increase by 20% to 30% annually in the coming years. The global meat market is valued at $ 1 trillion, which means vegan products are still only a fraction of the market, but this gives the market plenty of room for growth.

It is believed, however, that the existing plant-based meat alternatives will no longer be the main alternative to meat. The not-yet-widespread cultivated meat is expected to quickly overtake the plant-based alternatives as technology advances and consumer acceptance increases.
